Clarification
of BCGEU seniority in recruitment situations.
Re: BCGEU
Faculty and Support Staff.
December 13,
2002
The following
is a correction to the application of the
collective agreement for the BCGEU Faculty
and Support Staff bargaining units.
Effective immediately,
the total service in each bargaining unit
(separately) irrespective of geographic location,
will be used to determine seniority in a
specific job competition.
For example: a
clerk with 1.2 years of service in Smithers,
.4 years of service in Hazelton, and .2 years
of service in Houston, will have a total
of 1.8 years of service and may apply for
a position in Terrace. Skills and education
being equal, if the Terrace applicant has
only 1.5 years of combined service the Smithers
employee would be offered the position.
You cannot add
faculty service and support staff service
together, only service in various geographic
locations within one bargaining unit. A support
staff member applying for a faculty position
would be deemed to be an internal applicant
with zero seniority, and would thus take
precedence over an external applicant and
vice versa.
This does not
affect bumping situations or recall of employees
on layoff that are still limited to geographic
locations if the employee has less than three
years combined service. Please see Article
11.9(c)(3) and (4), and Article 11.11.
