A summer gathering to decolonize post secondary education

Northwest Community College is on a transformative journey to indigenize the culture and practice how it provides education in Northwest British Columbia.

Challenging the Paradigm 2009 is a summer gathering of scholars and leaders in the post secondary system to exchange ideas. This summer, the focus will be on community engagement, innovations in pedagogy, and successes. Keynote speeches from an exceptional group of prominent aboriginal speakers will stimulate the gathering and frame the discussions of the most innovative practitioners.

Program highlights will include:

  • Opening of the Gathering by the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, His Honour, Steven L. Point.
  • National Aboriginal Days in Terrace (June 21).
  • Guest Speakers include Grand Chief Ed John, Professor Leroy Little Bear, and Professor Lorna Williams. Speaker Bios....
  • Plenary sessions on
    • Engagement: Indigenous Leadership and education
    • Finding the Epistemology
    • Innovation: Holistic approaches to learning
    • What Success looks like
  • Panels and discussions on best practices in implementing the paradigm shift
  • Community of Practice Panel discussion on Aboriginal Service Plans: “Sharing and Visioning?
  • Exhibition at the Freda Diesing School of NW Coast Art
  • Gathering Banquet prepared by NWCC Culinary Arts diploma class
  • Salmon BBQ and tour of the Kitselas Canyon National Heritage Centre, including cultural events.

All Inclusive Fee

Note: Fee includes registration, Opening ceremony, cultural displays, Banquet and entertainment, Salmon BBQ and cultural night at Kitselas Heritage Centre located at Gitaus, four lunches and daily refreshments

  1. Early Registration:  $425.00 by May 21
  2. Regular Registration: $450.00 by June 17
  3. Day Registrations:  $125/day

Additional tickets are available for the following:Monday Banquet - $35.00

  • Wednesday Barbeque/Cultural Night - $35.00

Cancellation Policy

A refund of the conference tuition less a $75 processing fee is available if NWCC is notified in writing of your cancellation prior to May 29.
After May 29, a 50 % refund is available if NWCC is notified in writing of your cancellation at least 15 fifteen days prior to the start of the conference
(by June 5).
No refunds will be given after this time.
Approved refunds will be issued two (2) to three (3) weeks AFTER the Conference. 
Registered delegates who do not attend the Conference and have not submitted a written cancellation or substitution request will be invoiced for the full amount outstanding.
