Applied Research Workshop - NetWORKS: Research & Relationships
NWCC launches its new House of Learning and Applied Research program with NetWORKS
Monday, March 15, 2010 • 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

House of Learning & Applied Research (HLAR)
was created in 2007 as a new initiative at the College.  Headed by an executive director, HLAR reports directly to the President of the College and consults with various committees including First Nations Council.

The name House of Learning and Applied Research was chosen explicitly to acknowledge the essential role Aboriginal people have in post secondary education in the Northwest, and to raise the profile of the applied research activities at the college.

The House of Learning and Applied Research is committed to post secondary education and applied research in the Northwest. HLAR is dedicated to developing the resources, facilities, and expertise to support and build programs that are relevant and accessible to the students and communities of the Northwest.  With a vision of a strong and sustainable Northwest as its operational premise, the central goal of HLAR is the empowerment of all citizens in the Northwest through education, training programs, and the development and application of knowledge that is relevant to the Northwest.

A key goal of HLAR is to transform the educational and training practices of the College so as to engage and incorporate the perspectives of the Aboriginal communities in the Northwest and to address the challenges those populations face.  To this end, HLAR is dedicated to providing a positive environment for all Aboriginal students, staff, and faculty.  Following the philosophy “of one heart”, the spirit of HLAR is guided by the values of respect, relationships, and responsibility.

The applied research role is a new role for NWCC as an institution, although many individuals within NWCC engage in formal or informal applied research projects.  HLAR is a place where this information can be acknowledged, supported, and the results, collected and shared.  Applied research conducted at NWCC focuses on activities with community relevance, where partnerships lead to benefits for the institution, communities, and students.  Given the leadership role NWCC has taken in the area of Aboriginal training, there exists a strong emphasis on applied research that involves issues defined by Aboriginal communities.  Research is foundational to the delivery of the College’s Aboriginal mandate.
