Social Service Worker student doubles up on awards |

| TERRACE – Social Service Worker Diploma student Mike Davis continues to be recognized for his achievements, both in and out of the classroom. Last year, Davis was awarded the BC Aboriginal Student Award from the Irving K. Barber Scholarship Society. This time, he has received a national award from the Assembly of First Nations.
Davis was chosen winner of a Heroes of our Time scholarship, specifically, the Walter Dieter Memorial Award for his academic excellence and work as a volunteer in the community. Davis has volunteered his time coaching youth basketball and soccer, and worked at the Terrace Emergency Shelter during his most recent practicum. He says he was unprepared for the surprise of hearing the news of his latest accomplishment. “I was pretty happy — surprised and happy!” said Davis, a second-year Social Service Worker student. “I am very honoured to receive this because the Assembly of First Nations is the organization that represents all First Nations people in Canada. I think along the same lines as the AFN in not wanting to change what happened in the past but to focus on making a better future.” Davis adds he never pictured himself thriving in, let alone attending, college. “I never thought I would win this,” he added. “You think you can’t but you can.” NWCC President Stephanie Forsyth says an acknowledgment from a national body, such as the Assembly of First Nations, is really something Davis and the College should be proud of. “Mike’s story of success is one in which the College takes great pride,” states Forsyth. “His is one of perseverance, hard work and dedication to those people that are looking up to him in his role as a community leader.” Davis said he plans to continue his education at UNBC in Terrace and eventually earn his Masters in Social Work. Professionally, Davis would like to work in the field of youth and addictions and he hopes to eventually work in his home community of Laxgalts'ap in the Nass Valley. - 30 - For more information contact: Dave O’Leary
