DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

Northwest Community College is seeking a highly qualified and dynamic individual to hold the position of Director of Education, Haida Gwaii.

DUTIES:

Based in Haida Gwaii, this position is accountable to the Vice-President, Education & Student Services and is responsible for the learner centred leadership and administration of post-secondary education and training programs offered at the at the Haida Heritage Centre at Kaay Llnagaay and throughout Haida Gwaii. The position has responsibility for the development, implementation and follow-up of an Education Plan and for implementing innovative and effective educational opportunities that meet the post-secondary needs of learners, communities, Kaay Llnagaay Heritage Centre Society and other organizations on Haida Gwaii.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate will have a graduate degree, five or more years of teaching experience within the post-secondary system and a proven administrative track record in education. They will also have a deep understanding of Aboriginal cultural values, broad experience dealing with issues relating to Aboriginal education, and knowledge of and previous success working with Aboriginal communities and organizations. In addition, candidates must be prepared to assume administrative responsibilities and serve as part of the college management team directing college operations on Haida Gwaii.

    The Director of Education position is well suited to a seasoned educator who has a genuine and meaningful sense of Haida values, takes a decolonizing approach to education, and is ready to apply their skills and experience to new challenges in a dynamic and progressive environment.
      Applicants must also demonstrate an understanding of the culture and world view of Aboriginal people and the barriers Aboriginal students face in accessing and succeeding in post-secondary education. A respectful learner-centred focus is essential as is a commitment to contribute to the goals of the department.
        Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of and be willing to adhere and contribute to the implementation of the vision, mission, values, and strategic direction of the College’s Strategic Plan.
