Program Overview
The Sustainable Tourism program is a full time, academic program currently being offered in Terrace. It comprises a Certificate level (year one) and Diploma level (year two – currently under development). Successful completion of first year will earn students a Sustainable Tourism Certificate.
The Sustainable Tourism program at NWCC provides valuable education and training for students interested in a career in tourism by exploring topics such as cultural tourism, sustainable tourism, heritage interpretation, entrepreneurship, customer service and managerial skills, event and festival management, and marketing and communications.
Guiding principles of this program are to:
- Highlight and weave First Nations perspectives on the nature of the human environment relationship and the meaning of community throughout the program
- Minimize negative environmental, social, and cultural impacts of tourism
- Generate economic profit from tourism for local people and improve their quality of life
- Promote local peoples’ participation in decision making and planning
- Contribute to natural and cultural preservation and conservation and promote the importance of and protection of biodiversity
- Highlight the unique diversity of natural and cultural heritage in northwestern BC
- Promote tourism development that enables visitors to observe and understand environmental and cultural relationships
