Course Descriptions

HCAS 101 – 1.0:  Health Care Assistant:  Introduction to Practice
This course provides an introduction to the role of the HCA within the British Columbia health care system. Students will be introduced to the healthcare team and the roles and functions of HCA within the team. Students will also have opportunities to develop self-reflective skills required for competent practice and will be introduced to effective job-finding approaches.

HCAS 102 – 1.0: Health:  Lifestyles and Choices
This course introduces students to a holistic concept of health and the components of a health enhancing lifestyle.  Students will be invited to reflect on their own experience of health, recognizing challenges and resources that can impact lifestyle choices. Physical, psychological, social, spiritual and environmental influences on health are explored. Students will be introduced to a model that can be applied in other courses to understand the multi-faceted aspects of health and healing.

HCAS 104 – 2.5: Health & Healing: Concepts for Practice
This course provides the opportunity to develop a theoretical framework for practice.  Students will be introduced to the philosophical values and theoretical understandings that provide a foundation for competent practice as a Health Care Assistant. The course focuses on concepts of caring and person centred care; basic human needs and human development; family, culture and diversity as they relate to health and healing. Students will be introduced to a problem-solving model that will be critical to their practice.

HCAS 105 – 4.0: Healing 1: Caring for Individuals Experiencing Common Health Challenges
This course introduces students to the normal structure and function of the human body and normal bodily changes associated with aging. Students will explore common challenges to health and healing in relation to each body system. Students will also be encouraged to explore person-centred practice as it relates to the common challenges to health and, in particular, to end-of-life care.
Prerequisites: HSRC 104

HCAS 106 – 2.0: Healing 2: Caring for Individuals Experiencing Cognitive or Mental Challenges
This course builds on content from other courses to assist students to explore concepts and caregiving approaches that will allow them to work effectively with individuals experiencing cognitive or mental challenges.  Emphasis is on recognizing behaviours and identifying person-centred intervention strategies.
Prerequisites: HCAS 104

HCAS 107 – 4.0: Healing 3: Personal Care Assistance
This practical course offers students the opportunity to acquire personal care and assistance skills within the parameters of the HCA role. The course is comprised to class and supervised laboratory experiences which assist the student to integrate theory from other courses to develop care-giver skills that maintain and promote the comfort, safety and independence of individuals in community and facility contexts.

HCAS 108 – 2.0: Practice Experience in Home Support and/or Assisted Living
This practice course provides students with an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills from all other courses with individuals and families in a community setting. Opportunity will be provided for students to become more familiar with the role of the HCA within a Home Support Agency and gain abilities that will prepare graduates to assume the role of a Community Health Worker.
Prerequisites: HCAS 101, 102, 105, 106, 107, 113, 114 and English 11 or ENGL 040 or 043 or 045 or equivalent.

HCAS 109 – 6.0: Practice Experience in Multi-Level and/or Complex Care I
This supervised practice experience provides students with an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills from all other courses in the program with individuals in a multi-level or complex care setting. A portion of this clinical experience will be devoted to working with individuals experiencing cognitive challenges.
The final transitional practice experience provides an opportunity for the learner to gain increased self-confidence in the work setting and to become socialized into the work role. 
Prerequisites: HCAS 101, 102, 105, 106, 107, 113, 114 and English 11 or ENGL 040 or 043 or 045 or equivalent.

HCAS 110 – 2.0: Transition Practice Experience
The intent of the practice experience is to provide transition for the learner from student to graduate. During this time, the student will work closely with an experienced Health Care Assistant who will guide the student as a facilitator and as a mentor to help the student gain further insights, awareness and knowledge through the realities of the work setting. Program instructors will collaborate with facility or community placement, HCA and learner to facilitate this experience. 
Prerequisites: HCAS 108 and HCAS 109.

HCAS 113 – 1.0: Human Relations 1:  Interpersonal Communications
This course introduces the student to the basic process and content of effective interpersonal communication. Various concepts will be learned such as self-concept, perception, emotions, language, non-verbal communication, listening and managing interpersonal conflict. Students will be encouraged to become more aware of the impact of their own communication choices and patterns. They will have opportunity to develop and use communication techniques that demonstrate personal awareness, respect and active listening skills.

HCAS 114 – 0.5: Human Relations 2:  Communication Skills in Health Care 
This course builds on the communication skills developed in Human Relations =1: Interpersonal Communications. Students will have the opportunity to develop and use communications techniques used in a variety of care giving contexts.
Prerequisites: HCAS 113; Co-requisites: HCAS 107

FNHS 143 – 2.0: First Nations Health Studies 1
Introduces the learner to the role of First Nations Health Care Worker. Self-awareness and appreciation of Aboriginal culture and the impact of history on families and communities is explored. College orientation, planning for full-time attendance in school, and discussion of home/life balance is part of this course.
Prerequisites: Accepted into the FNHSRC Program

FNHS 144 – 2.0: First Nations Health Studies 2
A continuation of FNHS 143.  Expands on societal, political, spiritual and cultural issues that impact on the student's role as a personal support worker and caregiver.  Explores the role of healthcare workers and their impact on aboriginal families/communities. Students will develop a resource book of Aboriginal supports.
Prerequisites: FNHS 143

ENGL 043 – 6.0: Advanced English (Health Access)
English 043 is an advanced level course designed to prepare students for entry into health care programs, as well as vocational, career, and technical programs, or for entry directly into the workforce. Students will use the writing process to write paragraphs, letters, memos, short reports, essays, and a long formal report. Core skills in critical reading, comprehension, grammar, and medical vocabulary will be developed. Written assignments will be produced using a word processor. Students will participate in group work activities and oral presentations and in the critical analysis of health- related reading selections and media articles.
Prerequisites: ENG030 or placement at the advanced level

LPAT 100 – 1.0: Student Success
This 15 hour course is designed to introduce students to strategies and concepts to successfully complete a college program of studies. The course is designed to complement other courses within college program content.
