Stewart/Telegraph Creek Field School

Program Overview

This Field School highlights some of the natural and cultural wonders of the northwest. It includes a five-day field excursion that begins in the Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Park to hike on lava from Canada's most recent volcanic eruption. Here students will gain an understanding of both the geology and First Nation oral histories of this event. We continue northward to Stewart, BC and Hyder, AK, to observe some of BC's most spectacular glaciers as well as Grizzly bears in their natural habitat.
We then continue further north past Kinaskan Lake, Dease Lake and onto to Telegraph Creek, where we will observe the 'Grand Canyon' of the Stikine and Mt. Edziza, the source of the important obsidian trade for thousands of years of First Nations history.  During the field trip, students will have the opportunity to experience first-hand the impacts of climate change, industrial development and tourism on the landscape, ecology and culture and future of the First Nations in this area. Throughout the courses and the field trip, studies of the natural landscape are blended with First Nations culture and history.

Course Cancellations
A minimum number of students are required to run field schools. If that number is not reached, NWCC reserves the right to cancel a field school. Every attempt is made to notify you in advance. A full refund is processed automatically unless you notify us that you wish to register for another field school.

Confirmation
We do not call registered student to confirm that a field school is running. Students are ONLY contacted if the field school is cancelled. Check you registration statement carefully for course dates and time, and refer to this page for more info on fees, withdrawals and our refund policy.

Waitlists
Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis upon full receipt of tuition fees at the time of registration. If a field school is full, your name is placed on a waitlist. Those on the waitlist will be contacted and registration will be confirmed upon full receipt of tuition fees and the 20% deposit.
Should a space become available in a course (due to student withdrawals or another reason) the person whose name is first on the waitlist will be contacted. If that person cannot be reached the next person on the list will be contacted.
