Welcome to the Smithers Campus

On October 16, 2010, the Hon. Moira Stilwell, BC Minister of Advanced Education and Irene Seguin, NWCC College Chair, broke ground to begin the Smithers Campus renewal and expansion project. The $16.7-million project is one of 44 Knowledge Infrastructure Program (KIP) projects at post-secondary institutions across the province, jointly funded by the provincial and the federal governments.

The Smithers campus is being expanded and renewed to improve its functionality and health and safety, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, address trades shortages and enhance the learning environment for all students.

The new campus will house a large gathering area, expanded learning facilities and improved video conferencing and distance education capabilities. This includes additional classroom space, wet and dry science labs, a multi-purpose shop for trades programs, expanded library, a computer lab and one flexible-use lab.

The building, flooded with natural light and heated with Geothermal energy, will be completely accessible to disabled people. Wood, rock and First Nations art are featured throughout and represent three themes—mining, forestry and First Nations culture. The themes symbolize Northwest Community College’s connection and commitment to the communities of the Northwest.

This Gold LEED project will occur in two phases. Phase 1, the expansion, and Phase 2, the renovation of the existing campus, will be complete by March 2011.

During construction, Smithers Campus is temporarily relocating to 2965 Tatlow Road, Smithers, BC. It’s business as usual. You will find the same great programs and services at our temporary home. For more information call or visit us online.
