Students will be introduced to some of the most important and widely-used methofs of monitoring aquatic and intertidal zone habitats. The focus will be on professional field protocols for estimating populations of marine aquatic animals. Some examples included, markand recapture studies, Shorekeeper field surveys, Clam biomass field surveys using passive quadrant sampling, eelgrass mapping using GPS, mapping the physical substrate characteristics and biological features of intertidal habitars, tagging equipment technologies, and others. Students will analyze the data collected in the field and prepare technical reports of their findings for evaluation. Students will also learn the identification of local aquatic animals including mollusks, crustaceans, and echinoderms.
