Home Support/Resident Care Program moves to Kitimat

Northwest Community College's Home Support/Resident Care Attendant (HS/RCA) program will be offered in Kitimat this January. "This is one of the College's programs that is designed to be offered around the region in response to local health care demand," explains NWCC Dean of Health and University Credit programs Katherine McIndoe. "The program is finishing its run in Prince Rupert and will be moving to the community of Kitimat in response to the community's need for local home support and resident care attendants." Starting in January, the Home Support/Resident Care Attendant program will train students to provide care, under supervision, to assist clients in meeting basic needs and to achieve the highest possible quality of life. The program runs for six months and includes a 7-8 week practicum that places students in intermediate, extended and home support settings to gain real life, hands-on experience. Placements occur within the northwest region of BC. Graduates receive a provincially recognized dual Home Support/Resident Care Certificate that enables them to work in a client's home, or as Continuing Care Assistants functioning as members of a team in facilities providing Personal Care, Intermediate Care, Extended Care, and in Group Homes throughout BC. "It is of great benefit to Kitimat that this program will be offered here," states Doris Mitchell, Director of Resident Care, Kitimat Multilevel Care Unit and Terraceview Lodge. "There is an ongoing need for resident care attendants and home support workers in Kitimat, and other Northwest communities, and it is important that we have locally trained and available workers from which to draw on." "The program is a combination of classroom and clinical training which together provides students with job-ready skills and the ability to step right into an available position," states Program Coordinator Sabine Lundman. "It only takes about six months to complete the program and graduates are eligible to enter an in-demand, well respected and gratifying career."
