Local Drilling Company Launches Fundraising Campaign

Hy-Tech Drilling has donated $5,000 to help launch Northwest Community College's 2007 fundraising campaign for its School of Exploration and Mining. Based in Smithers, Hy-Tech Drilling is one of northwestern BC's most advanced diamond drill companies, providing drilling services across Canada and the globe. The company employs 100 people and operates 16 drill rigs. "We feel this investment in education is an investment that comes back to the industry in the long run. The School is a vehicle and we just have to put gas in it. It's our job to support the vehicle," explains Hy-Tech Drilling President, Harvey Tremblay. "We've worked with Northwest Community College for several years to provide training for Driller's Helpers, and I've watched it grow and create the School of Exploration and Mining to meet the increasing educational demands in the mineral industry." "Hy-Tech has been a strong advocate for training that will help maintain high standards and safety in all aspects of the exploration and mining industry," states NWCC President, Stephanie Forsyth. "The active participation of the Industry, in both financial and advisory capacities, is the central component to the success of our School of Exploration and Mining. In acknowledgement of this the College is matching Hy-Tech's $5,000 donation with an equal contribution." The combined $10,000 puts the 2007 fund-raising campaign on the road toward its goal of raising $250,000. This money will be used to develop programs that train workers for the mines of northern BC. Developed in response to industry skills shortages, Northwest Community College's School of Exploration & Mining, in partnership with Smithers Exploration Group and the BC Ministry of Energy, Mines & Petroleum Resources, develops industry-related courses and programs and offers training in various areas of exploration and mining. Over the past two years the School has trained more than 200 students to work in mineral exploration camps around the province through its Mining Exploration Field Assistant program. Other programs the School offers include the new Reclamation and Prospecting; Hy-Tech Driller's Helper; Exploration Camp Manager; Intro to Metal Leaching/Acid Rock Drainage; and Basic Prospecting.
