NWCC Grad a Family First

Northwest Community College (NWCC) graduate Jyoti Kalan has become the first person in her family to obtain a college degree. This spring Kalan graduated NWCC with a two year Associate Degree in Science and has been accepted to UBC to complete her undergraduate degree. "My parents emigrated from India and didn't have the same educational opportunities that I have today," explains Kalan. "They have always encouraged my siblings and I to get an education and out of five brothers and sisters I am the first, so far, to obtain a degree." Starting in September Kalan will begin her studies in UBC's Animal Biology program with plans to continue into the graduate field of either Medicine or Physical Therapy. "My plan all along was to complete my two year Associate Degree in science at NWCC and then transfer to UBC to complete my Bachelor of Science Degree," states Kalan. "The reasons behind choosing these fields above all else are my desires to make a difference in the lives of people by helping them achieve longevity and good health." Kalan attended NWCC right after graduating from Caledonia Senior Secondary school in 2005 and worked part-time while studying at the College. "Starting at the College not only helped me financially but also allowed me to focus on my studies without having to make the big adjustment to the new social and academic environment of a large institution and new city," states Kalan. "We are pleased Jyoti chose to begin her degree at the College and wish her the best as she continues her studies at UBC," states NWCC President Stephanie Forsyth.
