Skills Canada BC connects industry, students through trades competitions

Terrace On Friday, March 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Northwest Community Colleges Terrace Campus will host the Skills Canada BC regional competition, exposing students and spectators to the finest in skilled trades talent the region has to offer. This is a big event for us in Terrace, says NWCC Trades Chair Brian Badge, We get to expose our students to trades and see their creative thinking. But more importantly for our region, young people are exposed to the trades in a fun and engaging way. Winners of the regional competitions in March advance to the provincials being held in Abbottsford April 17. If they win there, then its off to the national competitions in Vancouver June 5 to 8 and a chance to compete for a gold medal. Winners at Nationals have a chance to go to the WorldSkills in Leipzig, Germany in July. The competition also includes a new Discover Trades and Technologies First Hand program where students between the ages of 11 and 18 the opportunity to try a variety of interactive, challenging and fun activities in a safe and engaging environment. Its no secret that our region needs highly skilled workers to support an economy that will grow in leaps and bounds in the next several years, says Hatha Callis of The Progressive Ventures Group, a Terrace-based development company that brings capacity and practical experience to a variety of real estate, development and construction projects in the region. Events like this help promote these skills to young people who will be taking up those jobs. Professional industry representatives and educators will also be on hand to answer questions and share their experiences about skilled trades and technology careers.
