Trades students compete in Skills Canada BC regionals at NWCC

TERRACE, January 29, 2015—Northwest Community College (NWCC) hosted the annual Skills Canada BC Regional Competition for trades students in the Northwest last Friday.

Each participant competed in one of four categories, including Welding, Culinary Arts, Automotive Service and Carpentry. Competitors were at the high school, Accelerated Credit Enrolment in Industry Training (ACE-IT), and post-secondary level.

“I really enjoyed this competition and I’m looking forward to the provincials,” said Jake Blix, grade 12 ACE-IT student who won the gold medal in Carpentry. “I think it’s great that students from across the region came together. We met competitors in other trades and learned about each other’s projects. This was a really fun experience and the prizes were awesome!”

Gold medal winners in each category qualify to participate at the 21st Annual Skills Canada BC Provincial Competition in Abbottsford on April 15, 2015.

“The Skills Canada competition is a great way for students to demonstrate their technical skills in the trades and it motivates them to succeed in their studies,” said Brent Speidel, Dean of Trades at NWCC. “It’s an important event for students because it can help them confirm their chosen career path and it showcases the need for craftsmanship in all the trades.”

NWCC would like to thank LNG Canada, the event’s sponsor. Its donation will help our regional winners cover travel costs to the Skills Canada Provincials. We also thank the following sponsors for donating competition prizes:

  • Milwaukee Tools
  • Acklands Granger
