Terrace, BC – Northwest Community College (NWCC) hosted a four-course dinner on January 14 to celebrate private and corporate donors that have contributed to NWCC and connect them with the students that they have invested in through bursaries and scholarships.
In most cases, donors were able to have dinner with the very students who received their bursary donations. Students were able to say thank you and donors were able to see the difference they were making on an individual level.
“Through donations to Northwest Community College,” said NWCC President Ken Burt to guests, “you are improving access to education and training for hundreds of people. Locally. This has a tremendous impact on the economic and social well-being of our region.”
A number of speakers shared personal stories throughout the evening. Former student and now journeyman heavy equipment operator Ojay Matias spoke about how receiving bursaries helped him change his life, learning the skills he needed for a successful career. In closing he said “…now I’m looking forward to being a donor myself.”
Northwest Community College has awarded 408 bursaries to deserving students since 2009. This valuable assistance, with a combined value of more than $350,000 would not be possible without the generosity of private and corporate donors.
The next recognition event will take place in November 2016.
