NWCC Prince Rupert Students receive $5,000 Ike Barber Transfer Scholarships.
Prince Rupert — Two NWCC students from Prince Rupert have each been awarded $5,000 Ike Barber Transfer Scholarships. Emma Payne and Leslie Olsen will both be attending degree programs at Royal Roads University this fall. Scholarship money will help these women as they complete the degrees that they started with NWCC.
Leslie Olsen, a single parent aiming to become an accountant, started her education at Northwest Community College because it was close to home. She will finish her degree through RRU’s blended study model, continuing to live in Prince Rupert.
“I only planned to complete the NWCC diploma, but now that I’m half way there, I can’t stop now!” said Olsen, who expressed gratitude to NWCC instructor Dave McKeever for supporting her goals and pushing her to apply for the scholarship. “It will cover a big portion of my tuition at Royal Roads.”
“NWCC provides numerous pathways into degree programs, supporting student success through exceptional instructor-to-student ratios and low tuition costs,” said Justin Kohlman, VP Education, Student and International. “We’re thrilled for Emma and Leslie and glad they chose to start their degrees with us.”
The Ike Barber Transfer Scholarship Program is open to students who complete their first one or two years of study at an eligible institution, such as Northwest Community College, and transfer their credits into full-time studies at another public post-secondary institution in BC. It is awarded based on a combination of academic merit and community or school involvement.
