Applied Business Technology

Overview 

The Applied Business Technology program prepares graduates for general and specialized administrative support positions in a variety of business and office settings. Students use popular software and technology to learn new skills and become proficient at managing information, solving problems and producing professional documents.

The program offers provincially-accredited training in business communications, computer applications, human relations, and accounting methods from college instructors online. Online learning is convenient, supportive and flexible.

Job-Ready Skills
Applied Business Technology offers three certificate programs each focusing on specialized skills. Earn one or all three of these industry-recognized credentials or choose from individual courses. Certificates can be completed through full- or part-time studies, or one course at a time.

OFFICE ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE
Train in current office software and procedures, business communications and human relations.

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT CERTIFICATE
Administrative Assistants contribute to the efficient day-to-day operations of businesses and organizations, and perform administrative duties for executive management. Learn the advanced technical, administrative and human relations skills required for success in today's workplace.

ACCOUNTING CERTIFICATE
Focused learning in specialized accounting and book-keeping skills.

Program Outline 

Each certificate prepares students with job-ready skills. They can be completed full time or part time or a course at a time.

Career Opportunities 

A wide variety of careers, general and specialized administrative support positions in business and institutional offices exist for graduates of these certificate programs. For those entering the business world, starting their own business or updating office skills the programs provide basic to advanced office, business and technical skills training which can be applied in a variety of business settings. As well, students will be well prepared to start their own home-based or small business.

Admission Requirements 
  • Grade 12 recommended 
  • Math 10 Essentials or equivalent AND 
  • English 10 or equivalent OR
  • Satisfactory performance on the CAT 3 Assessment Test.

 

Completion of the Office Assistant Certificate is a prerequisite to the Administrative Assistant Certificate.
Students will be given credit for prior learning obtained in high school, CCP, or other formal or informal learning.

Application for Admission

To apply, please fill out an NWCC application form and return it to any NWCC campus or send it to the Terrace Campus by mail (5331 McConnell Ave, Terrace, BC, V8G 4X2) or by fax 250-638-5432, or apply online.

Please note: Applying does not mean registered. If you are not registered, our financial aid office will not release your student loan documents.

Acceptance

If you meet the requirements and your application is complete, you should receive a letter of acceptance within three weeks.

Registration

Upon receipt of your letter of acceptance, you must register and pay for the courses you wish to take. You may pay by cheque, cash, debit card, Visa, MasterCard or American Express at any NWCC campus.

If your financial situation makes this difficult, please make an appointment with our Educational Advisor who is available to help you access financial aid opportunities and determine your eligibility.

Additional Requirements

You will require Windows 7 and MS Word 2013 and MS Outlook 2013 to complete the Office Assistant Certificate as well as an email account provided by an Internet Service Provider—free email (eg: hotmail) will not work for the material covered in ABT 125 Outlook. You will also require a 12 key electronic desk calculator with memory functions. For the Accounting Certificate you will require MS Excel 2013 and MS Access 2013. For the Administrative Assistant Certificate you will require the MS Word 2013, MS Excel 2013, MS Access 2013, MS PowerPoint 2013, MS Publisher 2013.

Dates and Locations 

Online learning is offered throughout the college region with a flexible intake. To complete two certificates in one academic year students will start in September or early October.
