Community Mental Health Worker

Overview 

Northwest Community College's Community Mental Health Worker Certificate will provide the basis for entry level employment in the mental health field.

This course provides an opportunity for study in the following areas:

  • principles used in recovery and psychosocial rehabilitation, knowledge and skills in assisting individuals with mental health issues to maximize their independence,
  • skills in running group sessions on health, wellness, symptom management, and assertiveness,
  • fundamental knowledge and skills for effective responses to clients experiencing co-existing alcohol and other drug dependency addiction and mental illness,
  • importance of culture in working with people with addictions and mental health issues,
  • preparation to function collaboratively as a member of the community mental health team.

Through a combination of class, lab and practicum experience, learners will be prepared to meet the challenge of assisting those who face various mental health issues.

Career Opportunities 

Graduates will be employable as a Lifeskills Worker II and Community Mental Health Worker settings  and working with clients in community and in group homes.

Learners should be aware that some employers require Grade 12 or equivalent for hire.

Admission Requirements 
  • English 12 or ENG 050 or ENGL 053 or ENGL 055 or equivalent AND
  • Successful placement on CAT 3 assessment.

To Register in CMHW 106: Community Mental Health Clinical Practice, student must have current:

  • Immunization Records and TB Skin Test
  • Criminal Record Search
  • OFA Level 1 and CPR C
